Carolyn Slupsky, PhD

Dr. Carolyn Slupsky is a professor at the University of California, Davis, and holds dual appointments in the Departments of Nutrition and Food Science & Technology. Dr. Slupsky actively participates in multiple graduate groups at UC Davis, including nutritional biology (GGNB), food science (FSGG) and microbiology (MGG). She is also a member of various research initiatives and centers, such as the UC Davis Milk Group, UC Davis Microbiome Research Working Group, Environmental health Sciences Center, Perinatal Origins of Disparities Center, UC Davis Coffee Center, Foods for Health Institute, Innovation Institute for Food and Health, and the Dietary Biomarker Development Consortium.

Dr. Slupsky is a world-renowned leader in metabolomics and data integration, with over 175 publications and has mentored over 40 graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and junior faculty members. She was named a UC Davis Chancellor’s Fellow in 2015, the Kinsella Endowed Chair in Food, Nutrition, and Health in 2016, and received the UC Davis Graduate Program Advising and Mentoring Award in 2023.

Dr. Slupsky’s research is at the nexus of food, nutrition, and health, where she extensively studies the impact of food on human health. From 2003-2005, she developed the core algorithm that continues to be used in the Chenomx software, which simultaneously analyzes many polar molecules from complex biological samples using NMR spectroscopy. This method (described in PMID: 16808451. doi: 10.1021/ac060209g) is now utilized by numerous laboratories worldwide. Additionally, her work extends into systems biology, where she excels in analyzing and integrating data across transcriptomics, proteomics, and microbial ecology/metagenomics with metabolomics.
